When communism is mentioned here it should be remembered that communism and socialism “are as two peas in a pod in their ultimate effect upon our liberties.” (J. Reuben Clark Jr. Deseret News, Church Section, Sept. 25, 1949, pp. 2, 15). Marion G. Romney said that communism is simply socialism implemented by revolutionary methods (See Socialism and the United Order Compared). To put things in perspective, it should also be remembered that socialism is a necessary transition stage on the road to communism and that the welfare state is creeping socialism. (See Ezra Taft Benson – no. 2 quote from the bottom, and Mao Tse Tung)

Socialism occurs on both the left- and the right-wing

We know that several parties on the left-wing are supporters of socialism. But historically, socialism has also occurred on the political right. Examples from history are Nazism (National Socialism) and Fascism. Ezra Taft Benson said that both communism and fascism are other forms of socialism (An Enemy Hath Done This, p. 43). We are talking about left and right-wing collectivism.

The warnings are not directed against certain political parties

When the church leaders have previously warned against communism and socialism, the warnings have not been directed at certain political parties but against the principles on which these political philosophies builds, whether they are on the left- or the right-wing. Principles that are fundamentally incompatible with the liberties of the US Constitution and the true gospel of Jesus Christ, because they more or less are based on coercion and violates God-given rights.

Heber J. Grant:

We believe that our real threat comes from within and not from without, and it comes from that underlying spirit common to Nazism, Fascism, and Communism, namely, the spirit which would array class against class, which would set up a socialistic state of some sort, which would rob the people of the liberties which we possess under the Constitution.

A Letter to the U.S. Treasury from the First Presidency, Sept. 30, 1941.

In 1936 the First Presidency issued this warning to the members of the Church:

Communism is not a political party nor a political plan under the Constitution it is a system of government that is the opposite of our Constitutional government .. We call upon all Church members completely to eschew Communism. The safety of our divinely inspired Constitutional government and the welfare of our Church imperatively demand that Communism shall have no place in America.

A Letter to the U.S. Treasury from the First Presidency, Sept. 30, 1941

The Constitution of the United States was given by inspiration from the Lord (See The Constitution – A Heavenly Banner). Its liberties belong to all mankind (See D&C 98:5 and The Constitution – For All Mankind).

The principles of governance inside communism and socialism and systems of government that tends in that direction are incompatible with the liberties of the Constitution of the United States (See The Welfare State -Creeping Socialism).

Again, the warnings that came from the leaders of the Church were not directed at certain political parties. They warned against government systems that are fundamentally different from the plan of salvation and in opposition to it.

Do not believe all that you read or hear

As members of the restored church, we know that the Father’s plan, which was presented in the pre-mortal council, the plan of salvation, was based on free agency and inalienable God-given rights. (See Inalienable God-given Rights). Satan proposed an alternative plan, that was based on compulsion. He sought to destroy our free agency, wherefore he and his followers were cast down to the earth (Moses 4:3 | JST Revelation 12:3). One of his primary strategies has been to restrict our agency through the power of earthly governments.

Doesn’t it sound logic that Satan also today seeks power over people through earthly governments? He isn’t only trying to destroy our free agency by tempting us to sin (John 8:34). His goal is to take our political freedom as well. He is working under disguise, often under a sympathetic facade. He pretends to be an angel of light (2. Cor. 11:14). As Joseph Fielding Smith said, he sits in the chambers of power, in governments (See Joseph Fielding Smith: Satan has control now). His goal is still to destroy our free agency.

We don’t have communism or socialism in their utmost forms today, but there have been given many warnings about the trends of the society in which we live today. (See The Welfare State – Creeping Socialism).

Heber J. Grant:

Satan is making war against .. the very foundations upon which society, government, and religion rest .. He plans to destroy liberty and freedom – economic, political, and religious, and to set up in place thereof the greatest, most widespread, and most complete tyranny that has ever oppressed men. He is working under such perfect disguise that many do not recognize either him or his methods.

Conference Report, Oct. 1942, p. 13.

J. Reuben Clark:

We are in the midst of the greatest exhibition of propaganda that the world has ever seen. Just do not believe all you read or hear. The elect are being deceived.
